Lakme 9 to 5 Mattifying and Hydrating Super Suncreens - Review

Lakme 9 to 5 Mattifying and Hydrating Super Suncreens

I definitely know how important sunscreen is for the health of my skin but it is one product that I invariably miss out on before stepping out. And the reason is that I dread the application! Practically all sunscreens that I have tried till date have made my face greasy, sweaty and irritated including sprays, matte finishes, everything. I have tried Lakme's Sun Expert range as well and the result was pretty much the same so I honestly did not get too excited when I first heard about the new Lakme 9 to 5 Hydrating and Mattifying Super Sunscreens with SPF 50. I would have probably given them a miss unless Lakme sent them over for review and now after trying them out for about a week, I'm in love. Read on to know why...

Lakme launched 9 to 5 Super Sunscreens in two variants- Mattifying and Hydrating, to complement their existing line-up of 9-to-5 makeup products. Both of these have SPF 50 and are said to be great under makeup. They have chemicals and parabens though. Here's some more details about the two variants:

Lakme 9 to 5 Mattifying Super Sunscreen : Specifically designed for oily skin with oil control benefits, its non-sticky formula leaves your skin feeling non-greasy. SPF 50 PA +++ fights against the harsh UVA and UVB rays to protect your skin from tanning and sunburns. Flaunt your flawless even toned skin this summer!

  • Dermatologist tested
  • Non-comedogenic (Does not clog pores)
  • Hypoallergic

Lakme 9 to 5 Hydrating Super Sunscreen: Enriched with vitamins, it helps you reduce spots and lightens your skin tone. SPF PA 50+++ keeps you away from tan and sunburns caused by the harsh sun rays. This summer, acquire a nourished, hydrated and even skin tone.
  • Contains Vitamin B3 and Provitamin C
  • Fights against UVA and UVB rays

I like the packaging of both these products. The bottle is rose gold and they have a golden lid. The bottle of the Hydrating sunscreen is bigger than the Mattifying one and both have a pump dispenser to dispense the product. The sunscreens are white in color and have a faint fragrance. The Hydrating one is more liquidy while the Mattifying one is much thicker and creamier in consistency. One would have thought it would be the opposite right! Despite the difference in texture, both blend very easily and evenly.

I have used both these variants and my favorite is definitely the Mattifying one. I honestly did not think it would live up to its mattifying claims but this product is really good. I wear it before applying my makeup and there is minimal sweating. Initially the face does look white but that goes away pretty soon. On application, the face does not look oily or greasy and I love that it does not irritate my skin and lead to breakouts. As a makeup base, it works quite well because it makes the skin oil free and that helps in the application of base makeup. I have worn this sunscreen and spent hours out in the sun and after coming back I did not see my skin getting tanned or burnt. Won't say that my face did not sweat at all outside because when the temperature is nearly 40 degrees and humid, there will be sweat but it was much less than what I experience when I'm wearing other sunscreens. If you have oily skin, this one is definitely worth checking out!

Mattifying Super Sunscreen (L)
Hydrating Super Sunscreen (R)

The Hydrating variant is better suited for those with dry skin. The texture is very light and it blends easily but this made my face slightly greasy and oily so I'm not much into it. In terms of providing protection, it does the same job as the Mattifying variant. I wore it outside and it did protect my skin against tanning and sunburn. If you have very dry skin, the Hydrating Super Sunscreen should be a good option for you. Else, the Mattifying one should work just fine in our weather.

Both these sunscreens are priced at Rs 500 and I do think that's quite expensive for 30 ml of product. I would have wanted Lakme to pack in more product in these bottles because sunscreen is something that gets over quite fast and 500 for 30 ml is not that great value for money. Atleast I'm thankful that these products really work and live upto their claims.
